Green Schools

Last year we achieved our new Green School’s Flag in Global Citizenship: Litter and Waste. The goal of this flag was to reduce litter and waste and raise awareness about the global impact litter and waste can have. We looked specifically at Fair Trade and how we, as a community can educate ourselves through curricular areas and make more conscious decisions when buying and disposing of items. We had a very successful Day of Action where we had a whole-school beach clean up day, which was generously assisted by Carmel O’Neill and Alfie Zellar.

This year, we are working towards our next flag in Global Citizenship: Energy. We have established our new committee and have conducted an environmental review which consists of an 0energy audit of the school and a Global Citizenship Awareness Survey. After that, we will develop an Action Plan outlining how we will accomplish our goals. In order to learn more about the problems and solutions in the energy sector, we will then interact with this information through curriculum integration. The topics of SESE, SPHE, languages, maths, and art will all be used to investigate this. To help increase awareness in this area, we will then be educating everyone and inviting the entire school and community to take part in a Day of Action. Lastly, we develop our Green Code, which outlines the goals that show the school’s dedication to eco-friendly practices.
